In the age of social media, it’s easy to find yourself in an echo chamber where your own knowledge, thoughts and opinions on important topics go unchallenged. While it can feel validating to only see and hear people who share your opinion on topics that you care about, being exposed to, and challenged by, opposing arguments is important as it promotes problem solving and innovative thinking.
An echo chamber refers to a situation in which a person only encounters beliefs or opinions that coincide with their own. In such situations, existing views are reinforced and insulated from rebuttal, preventing the consideration of alternative ideas.
The world is facing many significant social and environmental challenges and innovation is greatly needed if we are to find solutions to our most pressing global issues. Having noticed a significant lack of healthy debate at events they attended, Naked Innovations decided to launch ‘Barcelona Impact Debates’, a series of in-person events where audience members can hear respectful, factual opposing arguments on important global challenges.
The first of the Barcelona Impact Debates took place in early February 2023 and tackled the motion ‘Animal agriculture is key to solving climate change’. Despite an even split in votes ‘for’ and ‘against’ the motion at the start of the night, the final vote saw speakers Marc Coloma and Pablo Rosado who argued against animal agriculture being key to solving climate change ultimately win the debate. Completing the debate panel was Albert Orengo Roig and Will Elrick who both argued for the motion. Check out this video reel of the debate, created by Mel Brennan.
